It's actually quite fascinating how FaceID works. The infrared camera, front camera, infrared flood illuminator and dot projector work in tandem to accurately recognize a face and unlock the phone. Unlike older face unlock systems that use just the front camera, this one can't be fooled with a photograph. We've tested FaceID and seen it work in all kinds of lighting (and complete darkness too). You hold the phone in front of your face and it unlocks instantly — as if there was no lock. It works if you're wearing a hat, headdress or glasses but it won't work if you're wearing a mask. It won't work if you don't look at the screen or have your eyes closed. This means your face can't unlock the phone if you're sleeping. The big question is, why did Apple do away with TouchID fingerprint scanning — a system that worked so well? We would have preferred that both authentication methods were included with a TouchID sensor on the back or side. Having said that, FaceID is a lot more secure than TouchID and unless you have an identical twin, you don't need to worry about anyone gaining access to your phone.

This is the first iPhone ever to have an OLED screen and it is a thing of beauty! All the OLED benefits you expect (infinite contrast, vibrant colour) are present in good measure while the edge-toedge nature of the screen gives it that added futuristic look. Unlike some Android flagships, the screen doesn't curve down towards the edges. Instead, it's got really high brightness and extreme viewing angles — this makes the screen appear to 'float' above the device when viewed from the side. To complement the screen's deep blacks, the tiny bezels around the screen are black in both colour variants of the iPhone X.

The vertically stacked dual camera has one big change compared to the iPhone 8 Plus — both cameras have optical image stabilization. This is a big help in low light and also lets you get sharp images with the telephoto lens. It can shoot amazing 4k video @60fps and 1080p slo-mo video at 240fps. You will be consistently surprised with the results, especially the portrait mode, which gives a naturallooking shallow depth to your subject. We were also surprised with the all-day battery life which is significantly more than the iPhone 8 and comparable to Android flagships with much larger batteries. You also won't be wanting for performance — the A11 Bionic makes short work of any task. Needless to say, this is also one of the fastest smartphones ever, a trait it shares with the 8 and 8 Plus.

 

 

 

A Notch In your Face

When you first look at it, the notch is quite apparent. This isn't a rectangular display and there's no getting around that. To be fair, we stopped noticing the notch in a few days. And you have to spare a thought for all the technology crammed into that tiny space. Apple has essentially taken similar tech from Microsoft's Kinect sensor and miniaturized it for smartphone use. It has the earpiece, proximity, ambient light sensor and camera that most smartphones have. But it also has an infrared camera, flood illuminator and a dot projector. These last three are critical to the FaceID authentication system, the animated 'animoji' (it maps your face movements to animated emoji — it's hours of fun) and the TrueDepth front camera (that enables portrait mode, shallow depth of field effects and portrait lighting for the front camera). Apps are still being updated to take advantage of the full screen so you can expect some black bars here and there (in many apps from Google and Microsoft too). Videos can be zoomed in for a more immersive experience — and the fantastic sound from the dual speakers is a massive boon.
